A stunning and brilliant example of Mid-Century Modern Scandinavian art glass, this large vase was designed by Gunnar Ander (1908–1976) for Elme Glasbruk of Sweden, circa 1960s.
Design and Characteristics:
Form: The vase features Ander's instantly recognizable "melon" or "dimpled" shape, sometimes confused with the American Blenko 441 series. It has a full, rounded body that tapers gracefully to a tall, slender neck and a neatly finished, thick rim—a typical feature of Elme Glasbruk's quality production.
Color and Casing: The glass is a deep, luminous ruby red with exceptional saturation. It is a piece of cased glass, meaning the vibrant color layer is expertly applied over a clear or opaque interior layer, giving the vase a remarkable depth and glow when viewed in light.
Aesthetics: The combination of the striking red color, the organic, sculptural form, and the polished craftsmanship embodies the best of Swedish Modernist design. It serves as an impressive standalone piece of sculpture.
Attribution Notes:
While pieces with this form are often misattributed to Murano, Blenko, or Huta Barbara, the specific characteristics of the saturated color, the thickness of the glass, and the smooth, professional finish of the mouth opening align perfectly with the documented work of Gunnar Ander for Elme Glasbruk. Ander designed several of these popular dimpled models for the company in the 1960s.
Dimensions:
Height: 11 inches
Diameter (at widest point): 5 inches
Condition:
Good vintage condition with minimal expected wear on the base. There is a small chip on the outer edge of the lip which, as is common with this type of glass, could potentially be professionally filed down for a smooth finish.
